Stylish Headbands and more: An interview with Be Something New

This week's interview features Jill and Amber Prettyman of Be Something New. Jill and Amber are located in North Tustin, Orange County, California

Tell us a little about yourself.
I have been making bridal headpieces and veils for Something New, my first company, over 25 years and have sold to bridal stores all over the country. My daughter Amber convinced me to start Besomethingnew with her and make a more contemporary line of headbands. We are having so much fun doing this together on etsy and have sold to brides, bridesmaids and clients all over the world. I love getting away from just white and ivory. I love using vintage pieces and color in our things.

What special things do you create for weddings?
Headbands, combs, bridesmaids headbands boutonnieres

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
When I was getting married (28 years ago) the bridal shop were I was getting my dress asked me to go to work for them selling, I ended up spending most of my time making custom headpieces, then decided to start my own business.

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
A lot of the vintage pieces I put in my things I bought when I started my business 27years ago, and have had sitting in a drawer all this time. I am going to be so sad when I use it all up.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
I was married so long ago and there were not so many things to choose from like there is now, it was hard to be unique. I wish I had the amount of choices that brides have today.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Have fun and be your self, don’t let others influence you too much on your choices, you are the bride!!

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
I went to Hawaii, but anywhere with my husband is the perfect spot!

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
Courtney Love bought two of my headbands, which was fun, but if I had to choose someone maybe Gwen Stefani she has a fun style.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
I love the messy bow, I think it would be great to wear to a shower or rehearsal dinner.

How lovely! I, too, wish that I had access to more unique items available to me when I tied the knot -- many, many years ago. Wonderful work!
