Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm a freshly-married lady from NYC, where i live with my dreamboat husband, David. by day, I'm a senior producer of websites for luxury brands, and by night, i get my craft on, making veils and fascinators. (you can blame my day job for my love of fancy things and obsession with getting the details right.)

What special things do you create for weddings?
i create veils & fascinators with clean lines and a vintage touch. i love that coco channel quote about taking one thing off before you leave the house; i think about that a lot when I'm creating new pieces.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?

i taught myself to make veils as a joke for my best friend's bachelorette party--i made her an insane veil with rhinestones & feather crown. i thought it was ridiculous, but a few people at the party insisted that i should explore selling them. once i had some practice playing with different birdcage veil styles in preparation for my own wedding, i decided that those folks were on to something, and i opened up shop on etsy in 2009.

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?

i feel strongly about maxing luxury-quality pieces, and am crazy about proper finishing. i always think about whether or not i would be happy wearing the piece for my own wedding, so if it takes an extra hour to finish an edging just so or get the positioning just right, to me, it's worth the time.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?

i wish i hadn't waited to make my veil until the last minute! it was a bit of a "the cobbler's children have no shoes" situation--i spent so long trying to decide what i wanted to make for myself, that i ended up whipping up my veil an hour before the wedding. it came out well enough, but i would have liked to develop the idea a little better.

What is your favorite wedding song?
i love Ingrid Michelson's "the way i am." i am a sap.

What trends do you see happening in your specialty at the moment?

i see a lot of double-layer tulle & Russian net veils happening now, but it's a difficult look to pull off. I'm also seeing more traditional-style veils cropping up, like the mantilla. I've begun to play around with some nontraditional variations on it, like my feather trim mantilla veil, which has been a whole lot of fun:

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?

i really value the experience of wedding planning (i think it's excellent practice for marriage), but my very favorite part was the vows. seeing my strong-guy husband well up while we read them was like no other moment.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?

when things get stressful, breathe and remember the light at the end of the tunnel. the day will be transcendental if you let it be.

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?

we went to greece… santorini is gorgeous!

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they

be?

hands-down, Dita Von Teese. she's got the perfect vintage luxury vibe.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?

that would be my modern classic birdcage veil. it's a classic design, and the magic of it is that it can be positioned in different ways, so it works with every face shape:

What are some of your favorite shops on Etsy, wedding or

I'm obsessed with afavorite (http://www.etsy.com/shop/afavorite). they make the funniest thank-you cards… i will never stop buying the "you're f@!%ing amazing" pack, it's always gets a laugh.

Stylish Invitations: An interview with Peacock Printing

This weeks interview features Erica from Peacock Printing. Erica is located in Rochester, New York.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I was born and raised in Rochester, New York. After college, where I majored in English but took so many art classes that I ended up with two minors by accident (studio art and art history), I went to work for a bank. This left me wishing that I had chosen a career that would allow me to be a bit more creative. I love designing wedding invitations and am thrilled to have found my niche! I am recently married (June, 2010) and have two wonderful rescue cockapoos, Dexter (age 3) and Herbie (age 11). I am known for posting pictures of them everywhere so keep an eye out for my puppies! There is nothing I don't love about weddings, and one of the things that I pride myself on with my customers is making sure that their invitations do not become a part of their wedding stress.

What special things do you create for weddings?

I make wedding invitations, which I believe are one of the most special things about weddings. When you think about it, the invitations are the guests' first impression of the event, of all the planning that has gone into it. They set the tone for the entire wedding. And many people (including myself!) keep one to frame so that they will always have a keepsake of that feeling. I make them extra special by customizing them on a case by case basis, and always allowing my brides to keep tweaking until they are perfect.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
I spent a long time looking for wedding invitations for my own wedding. I was not completely satisfied with anything I was finding, so I thought I would do it on my own. I had a peacock themed wedding, and found etsy after a bunch of internet searching. And (with some help from craft stores and a few other etsy shops) they turned out great! I thought, hey, I can do this, and opened my etsy shop. Within a week I had made my first sale. And then it just took off from there!

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
I have absolutely zero professional training in graphic design. I had to teach myself printing and graphic design lingo, computer software programs, and I sought advice from other etsy sellers. I was pretty much on my own!

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?

I wish I had the wonderful print shop that I use now! I printed all of my wedding invitations on the color printer at work (shhh!) and although they turned out great, I would have liked to be able to really get the beautiful jewel tones that peacocks are known for just right, and to be able to print on paper that was a bit thicker. It also would have been nice to have someone else cut them for me!

What is your favorite wedding song?

Make You Feel My Love, performed by Adele. An old Bob Dylan song that's just lovely.

What trends do you see happening in your specialty at the moment?

"A lot of DIY is popping up now. People are trying to save money everywhere they can, which is great! Hopefully that will inspire other people to start creating things on their own - even if they need a little help getting started. Of course invitations are also getting more modern. Brighter. More couples are hosting their own weddings, so they feel more freedom to really go nuts with their invitations. It keeps me challenged, so I love it."

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?

The night before my wedding was the greatest single day of my life. Looking over all the details that I had spent so much time putting together, there was nothing left to stress about (the following day, however, is a COMPLETELY different story!!), and I was surrounded by my best girlfriends, just reflecting on the fact that so many people had come to show me that they loved me and supported me, some from many states away and some from down the block. It was awesome.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?

Don't sweat the details. The little pearls that go in the flower centerpieces are the wrong color? Nobody will even notice. Your wedding day really is all about you and the person you are marrying, and that is all anyone will be paying attention to. Just remember to breathe and take a minute to enjoy it. It will be over before you know it!

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?

I love to travel, so pretty much anywhere I haven't already been. New places, new cuisines, I love it all. I honestly would be just as happy sipping my drink at the swim-up bar as I would be hunting down the best sushi in Tokyo in January.

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they
be?
This is a really good question, but a hard one because I am obsessed with celebrities! I would probably have to say Martha Stewart, not only because I love her, but because how flattering would it be if Martha-frickin-Stewart wanted YOUR invitations?!

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
A set of thank you cards. I know I don't have them individually listed, but they're available. Pick a design, one that doesn't have to be wedding specific, and keep a set of 25 in a drawer somewhere. They are perfect to show someone that you appreciate them as much as they appreciate you.

What are some of your favorite shops on Etsy, wedding or otherwise?
I have so many favorite shops! There is so much talent out there, and it is so varied that it's hard to pick just a few. But here are a few handfuls that I find myself returning to over and over to see what they've got:

This week's interview features Natalie Briggs. Natalie is from Perth, Western Australia.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I live on the west coast of Australia with my husband. I recently got married in March 2010 and love looking and bridal magazines (still). I love arts and crafts and makeing as much of the things around my home my self.

What special things do you create for weddings?

I specialise in making handmade bridal garter sets that are modern, sexy with a vintage twist. I want to revive the 'bridal garter' with more fun and modern designs using the best materials in the most interesting way.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?

During planning my own wedding, i was disappointed in the lack of variety of bridal garters in the bridal stores. Many were very expensive, looked very out dated and cheaply made. So i thought i can do this better!

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
I like to use items nad materials in an interesting way, either layed differently, a bow slightly on its side. Little differnces from the 'norm' make for very interesting pieces.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
Most of my wedding was pretty much perfect, i wish i did have a more interesting bouquet. I made my own out of silk flowers but im no florist, they looked great but a bit 'normal' to what i have now seen on other out there after my wedding.

What is your favorite wedding song?
I dont really have a favourite wedding song as my music choices a little differnt from most. But i think the wedding march is a timeless classic which will be used for years to come.

What trends do you see happening in your specialty at the moment?
Trends in garters i see happening at the moment is moving away from too much lace and garters looking more like pieces of jewellery rather than lingerie, which is lovely!

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
I love the planning of a wedding, the very first stages- choosing a colour theme, style to base the whole event on. This is normally the hardest bit, theres so many options out there.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Make sure you get references for your hair and make up ladies. I had trials before and they were great, but on the wedding day they lost the phots they took from the trial, and even though i explained to them how my hair and make up was done, they did it completely differently and didnt really care.

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
We went to hawaii for our honeymoon, its such a peaceful layed back part of the world to relax after the stress of a wedding.

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?

Anyone really, a classy celebraty thougth!

Tell us a little about yourself.
I discovered the art of French Beaded flowers about 8 years ago and have been in love ever since.... Hi, My name is Fen and I'm a bead-a-holic. I have an OCD personality. If I like something, I go all out! I don't mess around ;) I do have a degree in graphic communications but obviously it wasn't my calling. While I was supposed to be doing my homework in college, I beaded roses instead.

What special things do you create for weddings?
My beaded flower bouquets are the stars of my etsy shop. Like any good marketer, I also create beaded hair accessories, clutches, rings, etc at lower points.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
Me, myself, and I! :) For my wedding, I designed my bridal bouquet and it has gone off from there. My parents saw how I was beading night and day and working full time and nagged me endlessly to just buy fresh flowers instead. I was tempted at times because I was just running ragged from planning my wedding, working full time, and beading my bouquet, bridesmaid bouquets, boutonnieres, 10 beaded centerpieces... oh my, just writing all of that is bringing back all the stress. But I told them, no. I'm known for my beaded flowers so how can I abandon who I am when it comes to the most important day of my life.

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
Some of my work aren't really "French." I've adapted some of the techniques so it's not entirely French in its purest form.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
I wish I made beaded hair accessories when I had my wedding.

What is your favorite wedding song?
Teresa Teng - The Moon Represent my Heart. I walked down the aisle to the instrumental version.

What trends do you see happening in your specialty at the moment?
Tiffany blue is hot right now.

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
My favorite part is the end. Yeah, seriously. I was so stressed out planning, I couldn't wait until it was over. The day was beautiful and I have many happy momentos.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?

My advice to brides...take it easy and enjoy the moment. It's just one day and all you have will be memories. It doesn't help to get stressed out...or fight with your parents about whose wedding it is. It's your day. period.

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
I didn't go on a honeymoon. I went to work the next day... long story. :)

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
I think Angelina Jolie will look fabulous with my Crimson Passion bouquet...she's already married, right? Maybe the next wedding... ;) just kidding.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?

This weeks interview features Sarah from Something Jeweled. Sarah is located in Ottawa, Canada.

Tell us a little about yourself.
Hi, my name is Sarah, and I'm the sole designer behind Something Jeweled. I'm 23, from Ottawa, Canada, and I have a passion for all things beautiful and artistic! In conjunction with my etsy shop, I also work as one of the city's top bridal makeup artists (sarahwalshmakeup.com). I started my two businesses while in university. Now that I'm finished school, this is what I do full-time, and I absolutely LOVE it!

What special things do you create for weddings?
I create custom wedding jewelry for the bride and bridesmaids. My pieces are designed with freshwater pearls, Austrian crystal, and precious metals. I work exclusively with CRYSTALLIZED™ Swarovski Elements.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?

From a young age, I've always designed jewelry as a hobby. I ALWAYS wear my own creations (usually my favorite coin pearl earrings and pendant). While working as a bridal makeup artist, my clients would always ask me where I got my jewelry! To their surprise, after hearing that I made it myself, they would always ask me to design something for them. A few years later, here I am with a full collection of designs, selling on Etsy!

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?

I guess what makes my work unique is that every piece in my collection reflects my personal style. My rule of thumb is, "...if I wouldn't wear this on my wedding day, than it's not good enough to sell". I have very high standards in terms of design, wear-ability, and quality.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?

Not married yet! Still looking for prince charming!

What is your favorite wedding song?

I don't even know if this is a real song, but it's from the old tv show 'Full House' (haha!). The song Uncle Jesse sings to Becky at their wedding. It's called 'Forever'. LOVE it!

What trends do you see happening in your specialty at the moment?
Long, glamorous earrings, and a matching bracelet! A lot of brides prefer a bare neck.

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
Getting excited with brides about their wedding! I'm such a romantic girlie girl at heart! I like hearing about all the wedding details!

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?

Don't over-plan. Things never run on schedule, there are always little bumps along the way. Relax, enjoy, and go with the flow!

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
Niagara Falls

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they
be?
Hmmm, well I don't really have any aspirations to design for anyone famous. I love designing symbolic and meaningful pieces for everyday women. It's the same when I do makeup, I would much rather work with a real woman over a model. I don't need to put a celebrity's face on my work to make it worth something.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hello everyone! I currently live in Los Angeles with my husband I and my daughter Roxy. I started Beane and Company in 2007, shortly before my daughter was born. We affectionately call her Beane. I have been involved with arts and crafts all my life. I absorbed it through my mother a seamstress, and my grandmother who was very accomplished with the art of crochet. I was a professional dancer for years and out of necessity taught myself to sew. It soon became a passion. After the birth of my daughter I began a love affair with children's clothes, there was really no other direction to go! There is lots of love and excitement in everything I make. I hope you enjoy.

What special things do you create for weddings?

I create wedding attire for children. I do what I call "vintage inspired with a modern twist" for flower girls and ring bearers. I've had so many requests over the last year for bridesmaids dresses that I have added bridesmaids and "Indie" bridal gowns to my personal website.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?

The first thing being, I am a girl! Like most girls I had been planning my wedding since I was 5! After I had my own wedding in 2002 I found that I still couldn't stay away from the bridal magazine isle. It didn't really take hold until my daughter was born and I began making her "special" dresses. It was then that it clicked...this was the perfect way to incorporate my love for weddings and making beautiful children's clothing. It was then that Beane and Company was created!

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?

I guess it not so much a little known fact...but I will change any color to suit the color palette of the wedding at no extra charge. If brides send me a swatch of color I will re-design a dress and incorporate the color anyway the bride wants. I also use 100% cotton linings so the fabric next to the child's skin is soft and they will be comfortable. Lastly...I use traditional couture sewing techniques on all the clothing. Even children deserve to have well made clothing!

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?

When I got married in 2002 there wasn't nearly as much accessible on the internet. There are so many blogs and great informational sites with great ideas out there today. It was mostly magazines then and you didn't get as much diversity as you have out there today. I tell my husband all the time that we have to have a new wedding every few years just so I can incorporate all the new trends that pop up! I guess that is the beauty of being on the vendor side of the wedding industry...you get to live vicariously through other brides!

What trends do you see happening in your specialty at the moment?

People are very interested in vintage right now. That really excites me! I am also very excited that brides are using brighter more non-traditional colors mixed with the more traditional ones. I am also excited about this "Indie" movement that is taking place now. People are not afraid to be creative with their weddings these days. Simplicity is coming back. I love it!

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?

Absolutely the idea/early planning stage. I love the blank slate that you have in the beginning when you are just throwing ideas around trying to find out what direction you want to go! Just standing back and looking at every idea you've collected and letting the perfect thing for your wedding jump out at you...with that feeling of "that's it!"

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?

Use your instincts and take your time in making decisions. Also invest in good photography...you will have those pictures forever! One huge thing I regret about my own wedding. I look back at the pictures and I'm very disappointed. Paying for a good photographer is worth it!

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?

Any place warm and tropical!! Or maybe Paris!

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?

Living...Sarah Jessica Parker! I know she's already married but I can dream. Also Anne Hathaway or Drew Barrymore...they have great style! Deceased...would absolutely be the greats Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O, and Grace Kelly.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?

So hard to choose...I am attached to everything I make. Each time I create something I think it's even better than the last! I guess I would have to say the Feather dress I have in my shop.

What are some of your favorite shops on Etsy, wedding or otherwise?

I love Silvia66. She knits the most beautiful things! Also bonzie...I've seen their stuff in magazines. It is so signature it jumps right out at you. A few others are giantdwarf and LoBoheme.

Results of our #HaitiRelief fundraising efforts

As many of you know on January 12, 2010 Haiti was devastated by an Earthquake. The Etsy Wedding Team came together to raise money to help the people of Haiti. The members of this team generously donated items, and shipping costs; and these items were sold in our Team Store on Etsy.

As a result of those wonderful donations we were able to raise $564.85! These funds have been donated to the American Red Cross's Haiti Relif and Development. Although this is no longer a main stream media topic, Haiti still needs our help. If at all possible donate to the American Red Cross, Unicef, or any other established reputable charity organization that will get the money to where it is needed ASAP. The American Red Cross has a minimum donation amount of $10.00, and Unicef is $50.00.

Every dollar counts; If every reader of our blog donates $10.00 we can raise $4,000.00 in minutes!

I would like to give a special thanks to Melissa of Design Circus. She created all of the artwork for the team shop, (as well as all of our giveaway artwork) and helped me to list the 50+ items that were donated by our team members. Women's wear clothing: An Interview with Amanda Archer

Tell us a little about yourself.
I'm a California beach girl at heart, moved to San Francisco to pursue my lifelong dream to become a fashion designer, graduated in 2003 from FIDM, spent 5+ years working in the industry as a designer before launching my own label: Amanda Archer Collection. I met my husband in San Francisco, he is a fabulous chef, we recently relocated to Chicago for my husbands work where we live with my 11 year old baby kitty.

What special things do you create for weddings?
I create non-traditional wedding dresses and custom dresses for bridesmaids, I'm also known to make matching ties and flower girl dresses from time to time.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
My background is in evening wear, special occasion women's wear dresses. My passion is designing dresses for all sorts of occasions, (I also love designing coats:) But what really got me into weddings was designing my own wedding gown and bridesmaids dresses, it was such a wonderful experience, I wanted to relive it over again many times.

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
My dresses are so wearable even for non-wedding related events, Some of my cotton wedding and/or reception dresses can be dyed afterwards to be worn again, which is great because I believe in being able to wear a dress for more than one event.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
Etsy! I did a lot of my own DIY wedding details, but I didn't know much about Etsy at the time, it would have been fun to explore different ideas.

What is your favorite wedding song?
The Luckiest by Ben Folds

What trends do you see happening in your specialty at the moment?
People are thinking more modern, simplistic and unique, getting away from the satin polyester "traditional" wedding stuff you see everywhere.

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
Picking out the fabric and designing of course, but I loved our reception which was held at Aureole, Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. It was sooo beautiful, we had swans in this pretty outdoor pond, even a view of fireworks during our champagne toast, and the dinner was AMAZING too:)

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Have FUN!! Don't let the pressure of the "perfect" wedding get to your head, your memories will be of all your friends, family and the laughter and tears of happiness you all share.

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
Paris, France

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
Zooey Deschanel, although she is already married... so I would need to go back in time.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
A LWD (little white dress) perfect for the reception, rehearsal dinner or honeymoon

Ceramics for your Home, Life & Wedding: An Interview with Dawn Dalto

This weeks interview features Dawn Dalto of Dawn Dalto Ceramics. Dawn is located in Asheville, NC.

Tell us a little about yourself.
I am 43 and live with my sweetie, Les, and 2 cats and a hound dog. I come from a long line of needlewomen and my first passion was beadwork. I was in my 30’s before I discovered that I really wanted to be an artist. My current medium is ceramics though I still dabble with some jewelry and beads at times (mainly for fun). I turned in my notice to “Quit My Day Job” in January and today is the official 3 day freedom mark. I am blogging about the experience as I go along too.

What special things do you create for weddings?
My main directly wedding related products are Ceramic Ring Bearer Dishes and a hand carved tree tile that features the couple’s initials in a heart on the trunk and their full names and wedding date on the back of the tile. I also create dinnerware and offer a wedding registry for couples.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
My sister did. She has been quite successful on Etsy (http://meandmatilda.etsy.com) and is very good at marketing her work. My desire at the time was to go back to being a full time self supporting entrepreneur. My day job was making me sick! After one of our long sisterly chats she encouraged me to take a look at some markets that were basically recession proof. More of my thoughts on that are on my blog The post is called “Married, Buried, Barking or Born”

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
The culmination of all of the various art and craft mediums that I have experienced that are included. I was a jewelry artist who did fine seedbead work (http://bluebearbeads.com) and that translates into the fine detail that is necessary for the hand carving, stamping, painting or image transfers that I use in my ceramics.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
I have been married once before, but not now. Though we may have to consider it for insurance! My ceremony for my first marriage was small. Just friends and family. The things that I wish I could have changed was not trying to do it all myself. I couldn’t enjoy things and don’t remember most of it. I wish I had worn a veil and that we had a videographer. Remember…I was married in 1986. Having a videographer was sort of new then!

What is your favorite wedding song?
I don’t have one. I didn’t have music at my first wedding. It was outside beside the beach and the waves were the music. Or was it the scurrying feet to get further back on the deck. It was high tide!

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
Falling in love.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Don’t let “perfect” overpower the fun of the day. It’s the things that don’t go right that you will remember most and laugh about in the years to come. You won’t remember it if there aren’t flub ups. It is a whirlwind day, take in what you can and if the heel of your shoe gets stuck in the deck, just go barefoot!

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?

Famous doesn’t make any difference other than in getting me more publicity to keep doing what I love. Every bride that I work with is famous. They have given me the honor of being part of their day and creating an heirloom to treasure.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
I make a small trinket dish that has the saying on the front: “Put On Your BIG GIRL Panties And Deal With It!” I think every woman needs one.
