Handwoven Excellence: An Interview with Nutfield Weaver
This week's interview features Kate Kilgus of Nutfield Weaver. Kate is located in Londonderry, New Hampshire, home of Stonyfield Farms Yogurt.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I have been weaving for over ten years. When I was about 30, my husband signed me up for a six week "Introduction to Weaving" class, thinking that I might enjoy an occasional creative diversion (our boys were 1 and 3 at the time). It was love from the first go. I felt instantly at home while sitting at the loom. I also like to spin and to knit, but I do this for personal enjoyment (I make a pair of handknit for my husband every Christmas). I also like to run and have completed 3 half-marathons. I enjoy mountain hiking and spending time at the coast with my family.
What special things do you create for weddings?
My handwoven lace wedding accessories include ring bearer pillows, petal cones, and wedding purses. I'm gradually working some clothing into my line. I hope to have a bridal shawl available by late summer. A client recently asked me to make a guest book cover for her, so I'm working on these as well.
Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
I stumbled onto the wedding accessory path by accident. I'd dabbled with dishtowels and scarves, but there were already a lot of these items available on Etsy and my Etsy success was confined to the occasional "heart." In December 2008 I wove some lace fabric for sachets to give as gifts for Christmas. The sachets were really well-received by family and friends, so I figured that I might have found something special there. I designed my first ring bearer pillow in April 2009 and haven't made a dishtowel since.
What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
I work with very fine threads. My spot weave lace fabric has a "sett" of 30 ends per inch, meaning that if I want to weave fabric that is 20" wide, I need to manage at least 600 threads during the warping process. It takes me 8-10 hours to dress my loom -- and then I can start weaving!
If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
I would have loved to have worn a fascinator or any of the other pretty hair accessories that are created by Etsy artisans these days.
What is your favorite wedding song?
Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria." My parents had that piece played for their wedding in 1965, and my husband and I had it played during our ceremony as well in 1990.
What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
Personally, I liked shopping for my dress - I wore a Priscilla of Boston white cotton lace gown.
What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Well, my husband and I have been married for nearly 20 years and we're raising two boys. There have been some bumps in the road, but overall it has been a great ride. Don't sweat the small stuff - I guess that has helped us out.
What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
My husband and I married young; I was 2 weeks out of college. We were 22 and didn't have a lot of money. We got into our car and drove to North Carolina, where we stayed at a charming Bed & Breakfast in Dillsboro. We'd love to go back there someday.
If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
I'm always thrilled to have one of my Nutfield items chosen by a bride for her wedding. However, in fairness to the question, I would be really pleased to have one of my accessories selected by Barbara Pierce Bush, President Bush's daughter, should she decide to marry someday.
If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
If every bride could have one item from my shop, I'd want her to have one of my tissue holders. It is something that can be carried all of the time and could serve as a long-term visual and tactile of her wedding day. I carry one of these around in my purse; it makes me feel pretty, even on my worst days.

Jewelry Galore: An Interview with Ten Storey Love Song
This week's interview features Jan Atherton of Ten Storey Love Song. Jane is located in Chicago, IL.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am originally from Livingston in Scotland. My husband, Jeremy and I moved to the US in April 2001, we lived in Memphis, Tennessee for about 2 1/2 years, moving to Chicago in October 2003. I work in my home studio, and at Ayla's Originals in Evanston, teaching beadwork classes.
What special things do you create for weddings?
I make jewelery, mainly wire wrapped and beadwoven pieces, using glass beads, crystals gemstones and sterling silver. I also hand dye silk and velvet scarves, adding beaded fringes, though I do not have them in my shop at present.
Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
When my husband and I were planning our wedding I made my own invites and I enjoyed that process. The jewellery making came along later, the first few pieces I sold were made for weddings, and I loved the time I spent planning those designs with those customers.
What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
I try wherever possible to find Fair Trade sources for my materials, especially the silver beads and spacers. They cost a little more, but I feel happier.
If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t? Not things, two people. I would have loved to have had my Grandma and Papa there, but Papa wasn't well enough to come. Jeremy and I had a day between our wedding and our honeymoon, so we spent the day with them, and my parents, they watched the video, we brought my dress with us, and we had pieces of the wedding cake at tea time.
What is your favorite wedding song?
I can't remember much about the music at our wedding. My cousin Carolyn recently got married, and a couple of her friends played a Crowded House song - Weather With You on their acoustic guitars, I thought that was really lovely.
What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
What we loved is that many family members and family friends were involved with different aspects of the wedding - my Mum made our cake, I made the invites and orders of service and family friends Marie, Alistair, and Katie made the wedding dress and bridesmaids dresses, photographs and video. Just spending time with everyone, is what I remember most.
What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
There will always be one or two things that don't go as planned, the wedding car was late arriving, and the band had double booked themselves, fortunately the venue had a set of turntables, Angus - friend of my Mum's stepped in, and dj'd for us! You can either let those problems drive you crazy, or you can just enjoy the good parts talking with everyone and dancing your socks off!
What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
Jeremy and I went to Amsterdam. The Van Gogh museum had recently opened when we were there, and we stayed in a beautiful B&B near the Rijksmuseum.
If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
I would love to see Emma Thompson, or Kristin Scott Thomas wearing my work, both are probably married already, though. Both are beautiful, intelligent women with a dry sense of humour, a little naughtiness, and an elegant, yet bohemian look.
If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
I'm not sure about any single item, as brides styles and dresses vary a lot. I like to make pieces that could be worn after the big day, and I love to work with brides to make something special to go with their outfit. If I had to choose one item my shop, it would probably be my Moondance bracelet, a similar style could be made using different stones, or crystal colours, it is lightweight with a soft drape.

Custom Wedding Stationery: An Interview with Cut The Cake Designs

Tell us a little about yourself.
I am mom of two beautiful little girls, Kylie and Madalyn. My background is in Early Childhood Education. I have always had a passion for graphic design. I have been creating Wedding Invitations, Favors, Wedding Guest Book Boxes, etc. for friends for years. Then I found Etsy!
What special things do you create for weddings?
My signature item is Wedding Guest Book Boxes.
Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
Making Wedding-related items for friends definitely sparked my interest. I love weddings. I especially love going to weddings. I notice every last detail when I’m a guest. I love getting new ideas.
What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
My Wedding Guest Book Boxes are going to be featured in the fall 09 Brides(Colorado) Magazine!
If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
I am not. Hope to be soon though.

The planning! I’m a big planner. It drives my loved ones a little crazy but I don’t know how to exist otherwise.

I would have to pick Italy. Never been. Hope to go someday. But I am terrified of flying. I’ll have to make the exception.

Accessories Galore!:An Interview With Y&E Bridal
This week's interview features Yasuko and Erina Bernstein (Erina will be answering the questions)of Y & E Bridal. Erina is located in Englewood, Colorado, and Yasuko is located in Aurora, Colorado.
Tell us a little about yourself.
Hello! My name is Erina and I am co-owner of Y&E Bridal with my mother Yasuko. We started Y&E at the beginning of this year when both of us fortunately and unfortunately were laid off by companies going under. While it was sad that we were jobless and that those companies no longer exist, It was rather serendipitous that we were both in the same situation at the same time. My mother had studied fashion design in her native Japan before moving to America to marry my dad. Since then she had been working as a seamstress for the last 20 years, the last 10 on high end wedding dresses. I was/am currently planning my wedding and couldn’t find a lot of what I really wanted so with a lot of my crazy ideas and my mom’s amazing talents, Y&E was born. Also I know some people ask why Yasuko does not answer any of the convos or answer questions in interviews and it is because she is not fluent in English thus I answer all convos and take care of the business part of Y&E. =)
What special things do you create for weddings?
Right now we have been doing pillows, baskets and a few hair accessories but we are going to start into garters and shawls very soon.
Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
I think the biggest reason was because I am planning my own and had wedding fever and my mom didn’t really know what she wanted to make but since she had the background and I had the mindset it just kind of fell into place.
What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
My mom actually very much follows a Japanese aesthetic. Things in our shop may seem very simple but her craftsmanship is meticulous. If there is a barely noticeable glue spot or a stitch is out of place she either makes it perfect or we don’t sell it.
If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
I am not married yet so hopefully I won’t have any regrets! I think my mom had once said she wished she had a professional photographer.
What is your favorite wedding song?
I know we are playing a different song at my wedding but I truly love the “Such Great Heights” cover by Iron and Wine. I always feel so warm inside when I hear it!
What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
I don’t know. I think just getting to plan my life together with my sweetie. He is my sunshine so I guess my favorite part of the journey will be the outcome when we officially get to be together always.
What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Don’t take it too seriously. Being engaged is supposed to be fun! I see so many brides that get so stressed out but you just have to remember that it is about love and sharing it with your friends and family. No one will notice if your shoes are a couple shades darker then your dress or your bridesmaid had a little too much to drink lol. At the end of it all they are just going to love you and feel happiness for you.
What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
We are planning on spending a week in Tokyo by ourselves then meeting up with my parents in Fukuoka to have Chris (my fiancé) meet the Japanese side of my family.
If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
Oh wow. I don’t know! I guess if I had to pick someone I would say this Japanese actress named Anna Tsuchiya, she has a cool style.
If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
I know that our bestseller by far are the ringbearer nests but I want to go with the High Society basket. I think they are simple and pretty and work for any type of wedding.

Hello! My name is Erina and I am co-owner of Y&E Bridal with my mother Yasuko. We started Y&E at the beginning of this year when both of us fortunately and unfortunately were laid off by companies going under. Since then she had been working as a seamstress for the last 20 years, the last 10 on high end wedding dresses. I was/am currently planning my wedding and couldn’t find a lot of what I really wanted so with a lot of my crazy ideas and my mom’s amazing talents, Y&E was born. Also I know some people ask why Yasuko does not answer any of the convos or answer questions in interviews and it is because she is not fluent in English thus I answer all convos and take care of the business part of Y&E. =)
What special things do you create for weddings?
Right now we have been doing pillows, baskets and a few hair accessories but we are going to start into garters and shawls very soon.
Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
I think the biggest reason was because I am planning my own and had wedding fever and my mom didn’t really know what she wanted to make but since she had the background and I had the mindset it just kind of fell into place.
What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
My mom actually very much follows a Japanese aesthetic. Things in our shop may seem very simple but her craftsmanship is meticulous. If there is a barely noticeable glue spot or a stitch is out of place she either makes it perfect or we don’t sell it.
If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
I am not married yet so hopefully I won’t have any regrets! I think my mom had once said she wished she had a professional photographer.
What is your favorite wedding song?
I know we are playing a different song at my wedding but I truly love the “Such Great Heights” cover by Iron and Wine. I always feel so warm inside when I hear it!
What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
I don’t know. I think just getting to plan my life together with my sweetie. He is my sunshine so I guess my favorite part of the journey will be the outcome when we officially get to be together always.
What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Don’t take it too seriously. Being engaged is supposed to be fun! I see so many brides that get so stressed out but you just have to remember that it is about love and sharing it with your friends and family. No one will notice if your shoes are a couple shades darker then your dress or your bridesmaid had a little too much to drink lol. At the end of it all they are just going to love you and feel happiness for you.
What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
We are planning on spending a week in Tokyo by ourselves then meeting up with my parents in Fukuoka to have Chris (my fiancé) meet the Japanese side of my family.
If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
Oh wow. I don’t know! I guess if I had to pick someone I would say this Japanese actress named Anna Tsuchiya, she has a cool style.
If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
I know that our bestseller by far are the ringbearer nests but I want to go with the High Society basket. I think they are simple and pretty and work for any type of wedding.
