Stunning Custom Bridal Jewelry: An Interview with blithebride

This weeks interview features Anne Charboneau from blithebride. Anne is located in Alexandria, VA.

Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m in my late 20s and have lived in the DC area for five years. I was born in the Midwest, where I met my husband, Ben. I used to be a managing editor at a publishing company in DC, but am now a stay-at-home-mom to my silly four-month-old baby boy, Cole.

What special things do you create for weddings?
I make bridal and bridal party jewelry and hair accessories.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
My sister-in-law, Laurie, taught me how to make basic beaded jewelry many years ago. It was strictly a hobby then, and I primarily made jewelry for myself and for gifts. As I began planning my 2007 wedding, I noticed that wedding jewelry was either extremely cheap (and looked like it), or extraordinarily expensive and not something you’d want to wear again. I wanted to find a balance between affordable, high-quality, and reusable jewelry, and I think I was successful with my own bridal jewelry. Once I found that niche, I discovered Etsy and began selling my wares in early February 2007 in another Etsy store. I opened blithebride in February 2008. That month, I also started my wedding coordinating business with a dear friend. Much of my life is centered around other people’s weddings!

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
Despite that I have a “crafts area” set up in my house, I have rarely sat down at my desk to make anything! I always load up my big bead board and head to my living room couch, where I sit cross-legged to make most everything I sell!

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
A band. We DIYed our music with a rented speaker and lights system, and my former DJ husband created massive iTunes playlists. It worked out great, and people had a blast dancing, but I would have loved to hire a band that could do awesome covers.

What is your favorite wedding song?
I’m not a fan of traditional wedding music. My bridal party and I walked down the aisle to a Bach piano piece I played as a child, and our first dance song was “Be Here Now” by Mason Jennings.

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
It sounds cliché, but my favorite part of the wedding journey is the day of the wedding. I can say this especially after witnessing so many wedding days as a coordinator. All of your hard work in planning finally comes together and, God willing, everything goes off without a hitch. You marry the person you want to grow old with; your family and friends enjoy wonderful company, food, and entertainment; and you have year upon year of happy memories on which to reflect.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Don’t get caught up in what you’re “supposed” to do! It’s your day, and you can do whatever you want! Can you have white linens even though your dress is ivory? Yes! Can you have sunflowers in your bouquet even if you’re being married in December? Why not?! There are no rules when it comes to wedding planning. Take your creative ideas and run with them.

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
Anywhere with beautiful scenery. Beauty is romantic!

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
Famous people don’t interest me much. I couldn’t even tell you a famous person who is engaged to be married right now!

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
My freshwater pearl and crystal hair pins match just about any bridal ensemble, and look great in short, long, textured, and/or straight hair.

5 Planning Tips for a Memorable Handmade Wedding

{This sign is by www.SignsByDiane.etsy.com}

The best weddings are felt in the details.

They capture the mood of the day that we remember most. And handmade details show the care and thought behind your special day. Use these 5 tips to make your wedding more memorable with handmade details:

1. Make the Moments Special
What are the most important wedding and reception moments to you? Opening the invitation? The walk down the aisle? When guests enter the reception? The guest book signing? The cake cutting?

Look for handmade touches to make your favorite moments shine.

{This necklace is by www.jurgitahandmade.etsy.com}

2. Add Surprise
From modern to traditional weddings, an unexpected touch delights your guests and makes your wedding unlike any other. Find something that makes you smile and it will brighten your wedding as well.

Want quick inspiration? Break out of the box by browsing through handmade items made by the Etsy Wedding Team.

{These cake toppers are by www.dandelionland.etsy.com}

3. Share the Love
No matter the size of your guest list, sharing something you love will make the gathering feel more intimate. Whether it’s your culture, sense of style or some of your favorite things, you become more connected to guests when they see you in your design choices.

Find handmade items that speak to you and can speak for you. {These cake servers are by www.Beadz2Pleaz.etsy.com}

4. Define Your Style
When you are looking for pieces from a variety of artists and vendors, it’s important to unify them. An easy way to do that is to choose a style or define a mood for your wedding. That way as you are shopping, you can easily see what works.

And because handmade items can fit almost any style, you’ll still have lots of choices. {This invitation is by www.maidavale.etsy.com}

5. Be Free with Color
Think beyond 2 colors and choose a color palette for your wedding of 3 to 5 colors. This will give you more choices as you are seeking out unique pieces. And what you create will be more visually interesting and result in a more creative design. {This bouquet is by www.AmoreBride.etsy.com}

Decorate your aisle with class: An Interview With Customized Wedding Creations

This week's interview features Cherin Szul of Customized Wedding located in Hamilton, NJ.

Tell us a little about yourself.
I started my business over two years ago and have been managing it along with teaching full-time since. I love adding a bit of me to every wedding we supply a runner to. I very much enjoy my business and can’t wait until I’m able to do it full time…one day.

What special things do you create for weddings?
Custom, hand-painted aisle runners, table runners, banners, and parasols.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
I was getting married myself and wanted to create my own aisle runner. I always loved coloring when I was younger and sort of thought of this as coloring (even though it’s painting) and just kept going with it ever since.

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
Our non-slip aisle runners are offered by only a handful of companies worldwide.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
A cute card box. I had a bird cage that I just hated and it didn’t hold all of our cards. We destroyed it when the wedding was over and I never would have done that with a cute box.

What is your favorite wedding song?
Lost in this Moment by Big & Rich (my wedding song!)

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
All the details. They’re so much fun and enable everyone to express themselves, making their wedding unique.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Don’t forget the details. They are what you and your guests will remember.

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
Somewhere on a beach/tropical island.

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
I’d be honored to have any famous person purchase an item from me. We’ve had some pro-football players purchase our runners, but would LOVE for a famous female to purchase because brides are often much more decisive and into the planning!

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
A custom aisle runner of course.

Remembering September 11, 2001

Today is a day that most of us will never forget. Every year when this day comes I always reminisce on the days events, and can remember every single detail as if it happened yesterday. Being a born and bred New Yorker this is always a tough time of the year for our city and state. I was in NY on 09-11, but in the suburbs at college, my mom was actually working in the city and called me to tell me what happened just after the 1st plane hit. Once we hung up all cell phones went dead for the day in NY so there was no further communication between us for many hours so of course I was worried. Like most americans, we spend the day in front of the television watching what happened in horror.

While I don't know anyone directly who passed that day, I do know someone who knows someone who knows someone.......that did. So I just wanted to take a moment to reflect on that day, and would like to hear your experiences of the day as well. Please leave a comment and let us know what you were doing that day, and how this tragedy has affected your life in any way.

Sending condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones.....gone but never forgotten.

Cultural and Theme Wedding Invitations: An Interview with CoolHot

This week's interview features Kemba Johnson of CoolHot located in Atlanta, GA.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I love to create things with my husband, Justin. We actually run the shop together and create everything as a duo. I have a not-so-secret love of Japanese anime and if I could, I would spend the whole day laughing. But when we aren’t crafting new designs and pieces for our customers, watching anime or laughing, we are marketing consultants (which is sometimes funny!).

What special things do you create for weddings?
We craft handmade wedding stationery, from save the dates and invitations to menus and favor tags. Our designs are inspired by cultures from around the world and by themes. And we love dimensionality. So in addition to drawing intricate design patterns, we use decorative papers, diecuts, embellishments, and multiple layers to make our designs pop.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
A dear friend was getting married and including her Persian heritage in her wedding. She couldn’t find wedding stationery that spoke to her, so she asked us to “brand her wedding”. We were hooked. It’s like we get to create personal art for brides to express themselves on one of the most important days of their lives. What’s not to love!

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?

All of our handmade wedding stationery is based on cultures and themes. For our cultural designs we do design research looking at decorative arts, textiles and architecture of that culture. That provides more options to find a unique interpretation of the cultural design. And then we modernize it for today’s bride.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
An actual wedding! We were married at the courthouse, which was perfectly fine for us at the time. But I actually love weddings, and would like a fun theme weddingish reception one day.

What is your favorite wedding song?
”At Last” sung in classic jazz standard style. Timeless.

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
The reception! All the work that went into the wedding has paid off, you’re married and starting to enjoy the rest of your lives together with family and friends over good food and music.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Be yourself and have fun. It’s so easy be pulled into what you should do in terms of trends, pressure from family, guests, etc. Your wedding is an opportunity to express who you are and share what you like with the people who matter most to you.

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
Secluded hut on a secluded beach.

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
Angelina Jolie. She seems to have a more global sense of responsibility to community and a real appreciation of multiple cultures.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
Our seashell wedding invitation. With a seahorse diecut, decorative palm leaf paper and a real sliced seashell attached with a ribbon, it’s so three-dimensional.
